Muncie Stars Tournament:

Game 1 - Goals were scored by Jarod Franklin, Scott Koontz and Matthew Franco in our 3-2 victory.

Game 2 - Goals were scored by Matthew Franco and Clase Degraff.  Clase Degraff’s goal was a ricochet goal off the upper post and far post before going in.  The game ended in a 2-2 tie.

Game 3- Jarod Franklin scored 2 goals.  Clase Degraff, Ian Crines and Scott Koontz each scored 1 goal in our 5-3 victory to put us into the championship.

Championship Game - Ben Jaggers saw his first action as starting goalie.  Matthew Franco scored the only goal in our 5-1 loss to the Elkhart Flames.  The match was very competitive.

“The team is playing the best soccer I have ever seen them play this early in the season” commented one fan.  One exhilarated parent commented “it sure was fun to watch them use their skills”.

09/06/03 :This was the first match of the season playing up an age division.  We won 4-1.  Six of our team spent a full week at an elite camp sharpening their skills, while several others attended other camps to improve their game. This along with strong off season requirements for individual skill improvement set a high expectation for our first regular season match.  The team responded with a level of play that we have been waiting for. One fan in the crowd was heard commenting "They played great!"  I think the way we played brought out the enthusiasm of the parents.  One parent was seen with a rather large trumpet device (for making noise) on the sideline.  Noah Price was one for two at the PK mark during the match.  Noah was taken down twice in the box.  The first PK was missed low and away to the left post. Later in the first half Noah was taken down again.  This time he would not fail.  He finished the PK by firmly placing the ball low and to the right post.  This gave the Strikers the first goal of the match.  Later during the half, Jarod Franklin "finished" a cross from one of his team mates to put the Strikers up 2-0. Plymouth began to find some momentary weakness in our defense and began a couple of counter attacks that we shut down by the goalie Jacob Cole.  However, one attack was successful that pulled the Plymouth Rockies within 1 goal of the Strikers.  The half ended 2-1 in favor of the Strikers. In the second half, it was all Strikers.  The team attacked the Rockies relentlessly.  Both Noah Price and Jarod Franklin obtained their second goals of the match
put the final score 4-1.  When interviewed, the Coach stated that it was probably the best this team has ever played.  The players were using most of the skills and strategy that we had been working on during the past couple of seasons.

09/07/03 : The match against Academy was hard fought.  Early in the first half, Academy snuck through the defense to score.  The half ended at 1-0 in favor of Academy.  The second half was a defensive struggle with neither defense giving ground.  Gradually late in the half the Warsaw offense found a small crack in the Academy defense.  There were several opportunities to score but were shut down.  With five minutes to go in the game, Keegan Beer threw the ball in to Jarod Franklin who directed the ball to Matthew Franco.  Matthew wasted no time in striking the ball from 20 yards out to put in the equalizer.  The match ended 1-1.

9/13/03 - The Strikers played a great game.  During the first half, Matthew Franco came down the right side of the field, with the defender on him, Matthew struck the ball from about 30 yards out and put the ball in the far upper 90 for the first goal of the game.  Later in the half, Noah Price was attacking the goal and was taken down in the 18 for a PK.  Noah put the ball just inside the post for the second goal of the game.  The half ended 2-0.  In the second half, Matthew Franco stole the ball from a defender near the 18, beat two defenders and put the ball far post for the third goal of the game.

The second half provided an opportunity to try players at different positions.  Ben Jaggers saw his first action as goalie during league play and made several saves to preserve the shut out.  Joel Widman and Jacob Cole saw action at the front line and had several scoring opportunities.

9/14 - This game provided a good challenge for our team.  The Pumas went up on us 1-0 during the first half.  Noah Price tied the game with a PK after being taken down in the box.  During the second half, Noah was the recipient of another PK.  A reward for being taken down in the box…again.  This provided our second goal putting the Strikers up 2-1 to the Pumas.  However, with less than 4 minutes to go in the game, the Pumas pierced our defense to score the equalizer.  The game ended in a 2-2 tie.

9/20 - This match provided a lot of excitement as both teams were undefeated.  The first half was a defensive game as the Strikers had only one quality opportunity to score and was denied by the post.  The FWSC had a few more opportunities but the Striker defense of Scott Smyth, Ryan Lundgren, Chris Sausamon, Ben Jaggers anchored by goalie Jacob Cole shut them down.  The defense played the best ever this year.  The first half ended at 0-0.

Ten minutes into the second half, FWSC took advantage of the Strikers only mistake to that point in the game and found the back of the net.  Then with 10 minutes to go in the match, FWSC scored the second goal to match out of reach.  Overall, the Strikers played the best team defense of the season.

Sept 28 - Warsaw lost 3 to 2 in a match that only allowed the other team 5 opportunities to score.  The first goal scored for Warsaw was by Scott Koontz.  The second goal came from Ian Crines.  Several of the Warsaw players had chances to score but could not find the net.

October 5 - Warsaw lost 4 to 2.  The first goal for Warsaw was scored by Austin Benzinger from about 20 yards out.  The second goal was scored on a blast from Keegan Beer on a drop pass from Noah Price

October 17-18 - NISL TOURNEY

We played Elkhart Academy for our first round match.  Elkhart took the wind during the first half.  We had Jarod "the Tent" Franklin mark their main player for the entire game.  Jarod shut the player down for the entire game.  The first half ended in a 0-0 tie.  Warsaw had the wind the second half.  Elkhart was able to develop on attack on our goal and Jacob Cole came out and blocked the shot.  The ball rebounded and Austin Benzinger came across the goal to clear the ball.  Although we mounted several attacks against Elkhart, we could not get any clean shots off and did not score.  The game ended in a 0-0 tie.  We then played the overtime period with neither team scoring.  Since the overtime ended with a 0-0 tie, we went to shoot out with Warsaw shooting first.  Noah Price took the first shot and put the ball in the lower left corner to put Warsaw up 1-0.  Elkhart's goalie took the first shot for Elkhart and put the score at 1-1.  Ian Crines took the second shot for Warsaw and put the ball in the lower left corner to put Warsaw up 2-1.  Elkhart game back and matched the goal and put the score at 2-2.  Matthew Franco took the third shot for Warsaw and hit the post in the lower left corner for the first Warsaw miss.  Elkhart also missed leaving the match tied at 2-2.  Keegan Beer took our 4th shot and placed his shot in the upper right hand corner putting Warsaw up 3-2.  Elkhart made their 4th shot evening the score at 3-3.  Ryan Lundgren took the last shot for Warsaw and hit the post in the lower left hand corner leaving the door open for Elkhart to win.  However, Jacob Cole stopped Elkhart's attempt to the lower left hand corner with a spectacular dive, deflecting the ball around the post to keep the match tied 3-3.

We now entered the sudden death portion of the shoot out as each team got one opportunity to match the other team's score until a winner was decided.  Elkhart shot first and missed wide, leaving the door open for Warsaw to win the match if we scored on our shot.  Austin Benzinger, was to take our shot to win the match.  Austin has been dual rostered on a secondary team within the club this year to get more experience.  Austin stepped up to the mark and blasted the ball inside the right post to win the match and set off the celebration as Warsaw Strikers won the match 4-3.  This placed us as one of the top 4 teams in the U13 bracket during the tournament.

In the second round, we played Elkhart Galaxy and lost 2-0.  We had previously lost 4-2 to the Galaxy during regular season play.  We now look forward to the Brownsburg Tournament next weekend.

10-24/25 - Our first game was against the Tippecanoe County Indiana Thunder on Saturday at 7:40 a.m.!  With bad weather coming, we found our selves trying to beat both the weather and the team.  The first half ended with a 0-0 tie.  The temperature was dropping and time was running out if we were going to get a win.  At the start of the second half, Chris Sausaman was moved to the front line to take advantage of his speed.  Shortly after the half started, Chris picked a missed clear by the Thunder and blasted into the goal to put Warsaw up 1-0.  With fifteen minutes gone in the second half, lightening was spotted and the play suspended.  Fifteen minutes later the game was declared complete and Warsaw Strikers the winner.

Our second game was against the Columbus Indiana Express.  We had played this team two years earlier for the championship in the Boo Tournament.  They still remembered us from that match.  This match found the Warsaw Strikers hitting on all cylinders.  Matthew Franco scored early on a direct kick.  Ian Crines followed this with a goal of his own from 25 yards out.  Later, Jarod Franklin dribbled through the defense and scored Warsaw's third goal.  Jarod then took a shot to far post that was blasted by Scott Koontz into the net.  Clase Degraff finished the scoring with a header off of a corner kick from Matthew Franco.  The final score was Warsaw 5 and Columbus 0.

Our third game was against the Center Grove Township Indiana Fire.  We needed two points to advance to the Championship Round.  Again Warsaw was up to the challenge.  Noah Price started the scoring with an assist from Keegan Beer.  Noah then scored on an assist from Clase Degraff.  The first half ended with the Strikers 2 and the Express 0.  Ben Jaggers was substituted into the game as goalie and Jacob Cole got his first chance of the season to play the front line.  Chris Sausaman was moved from defense to the front line and wasted no time in scoring with an assist from the goalie Ben Jaggers.  Ben made a save and punted the ball past midfield and the Express defense misplayed the ball giving Chris Sausaman the opportunity he needed to put the ball into the net.  The last score of the game was by Ian Crines on an assist from Scott Smyth.  Warsaw was moving forward to the championship.

The championship match would have the Warsaw Strikers playing the Fairfield Ohio Thunder.  This was the team who has given the Strikers their only loss in the four Boo Tournaments in which we have participated.  Fifteen minutes into the first half, the Thunder scored the first goal.  This was immediately followed up with a goal from Chris Sausaman on an assist from Ian Crines on a spectacular throw in.  The first half ended in a 1-1 tie.  The second half saw Warsaw dominating but not finding the net.  With seven minutes to go in the match, Matthew Franco took a direct kick and put the ball in the back of the net for the go ahead goal.  The match ended with the Strikers 2 and the Thunder 1.  The Strikers record at this tournament through 4 tournaments is 14 and 1!

I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the parents for their support, the assistant coaches for their help and the players for their commitment and effort.  This was a great season.
